Why You Shouldn’t Leave Your Tax Return Until January

Although the online Self Assessment deadline isn’t until 31 January, waiting until the last minute to complete your tax return can create unnecessary pressure. Each year, thousands of taxpayers rush to file their returns in January, often resulting in stress, mistakes, or missed deadlines.

The Self Assessment system requires individuals to report their income for the previous tax year so HMRC can calculate the correct amount of tax owed. This may include income from self-employment, property rental, investments, or other untaxed sources.

For the 2024/25 tax year, online tax returns must be submitted by 31 January 2026, and any tax owed must also be paid by this date. Missing the deadline results in an automatic £100 penalty, even if you have no tax to pay.

Completing your tax return early has several advantages. Firstly, it gives you clarity about how much tax you owe. This allows you to plan ahead financially rather than facing an unexpected bill at the end of January.

Secondly, early submission reduces the risk of errors. When you’re rushing to meet a deadline, it’s easier to overlook important details or miss allowable expenses that could reduce your tax bill.

Finally, if HMRC owes you money, filing early means you could receive your refund sooner.

November is an ideal time to organise your financial records and start preparing your Self Assessment return. Gather information such as bank statements, invoices, receipts, dividend statements, and rental income records. Having everything ready will make the process much smoother.

At Total Tax Solutions, we help clients prepare and submit accurate tax returns well before the deadline. Our goal is to remove the stress from tax season and ensure you remain fully compliant with HMRC requirements.
